In what situations is a cell phone repeater useful?

Cell phone repeaters are designed for in-building usage in areas where cell phone reception is weak or inconsistent. By amplifying the signal from a directional antenna that is installed outside the building (or wherever there is some reception), the repeater improves signal strength inside a building.

A repeater can be used:

  • If you have weak or inconsistent cellular signal inside your home or office.
  • If you have some cell phone signal outside yoru home or office (2 bars of cellular signal is recommended)
  • To improve signal for cellular phone devices
  • To improve signal for broadband cellular data devices (including broadband data cards and cell phone devices)

A repeater cannot be effectively used:

  • In cars or automobiles - the power of the repeater is too high, and causes oscillation in these situations. Also, the directional antenna cannot be correctly aligned on a moving object.
  • If you have very weak signal both inside and outside your home or office (1 bar or less). In these situations, repeaters may still be used if accompanied by a Yagi Antenna.
